Ease.
Response is the first quality I assess in a reed. If a reed does not respond easily, it may get in the way! I play on medium-response reeds made from an Innoledy gouge with a Gilbert -1 shaper tip.
Stability.
It is very important that we play in tune with ourselves and in tune with others. A great reed’s intonation is reliable and consistent. I make American, long scrape reeds that peep a C and crow a C-sharp.
Balance.
Each player’s tone is a unique part of what defines us as oboists. Your reeds should compliment your instrument and the tone you are aiming for. I believe aspects of a great tone include warmth, resonance, and depth.
