Rising out of the texture as a unique voice in the orchestra, Eliza Geer is an American oboist who is passionate about performing and studying the music of our time. As an orchestral musician, Eliza has performed as a substitute musician with professional orchestras across the country such as the Richmond (VA) Symphony Orchestra, Kansas City Sinfonietta, and more.
Eliza was a featured oboist in the Kansas City Conducting Symposium during the summer of 2022. In her summers, she has attended and performed at several music festivals, including the Atlantic Music Festival in Waterville, ME, the Wintergreen Music Festival in Nellysford, VA and the John Mack Oboe Camp.
An advocate for collaboration and premiering new music, she has premiered many new works for solo oboe and various chamber ensembles. She regularly performs and programs works by living composers. Recent premieres include Poem by James Taylor for oboe and piano, and The Things Left Behind commissioned by Austin Engelhardt for solo oboe. Eliza prioritizes new and diverse repertoire in her teaching and performing.
As an educator, Eliza has grown and maintained private studios in both Kansas City and western North Carolina. Her students have gone on to be featured in the North Carolina All-State Band, Missouri and Kansas All-District Bands and in the Winston-Salem Youth Symphony Orchestra. Eliza hopes to inspire and nurture a love for music in her students.
Eliza founded OboeKC in 2023 with the hopes of inspiring connection, collaboration, and creativity in her community. OboeKC provides access to oboe lessons and equipment to low-income students in the Kansas City metro area. Shared artistic experiences and mentorship like those offered in private music lessons enable strong connections, transcending to the community environment. OboeKC unites communities by providing music lessons to children from a range of artistic, geographic, racial and socioeconomic backgrounds.
She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Oboe Performance from the University of Missouri- Kansas City Conservatory, and has completed additional graduate studies at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. Her primary teachers have included Lauren Williams, Sherie Lake Aguirre, Emily Beare, Jaren Atherholt, and Celeste Johnson Frehner.
